The Coven

The Coven

By Jacqueline Dowdy

He burnt our home
To the goddamn ground
Ashes to ashes to hopelessness
&
I'm stuck on the intersection of
Grinding teeth and stomach acid
And I've had nightmares of
Receding tail lights glowing red in the dark

                                          Like demon's eyes.

But
He burnt his fingers
On matches meant for witches
Shaking hands and scar tissue
He ran from my Mother with her
                           Black cat

And my clenched fists
And my sister's sharp tongue.
He never saw it coming
We built empires
From sand and stars
Like our strong grandmother before us
Right our from under him
And crushed
His goddamn
             bones.

Take your blackened
Heart
And tar filled
Lungs
And go and
               Fuck
                       Yourself.
